Understanding Credentials

What Does Board Certified Mean?

In medicine, law, and forensic science, “Board Certified” means a professional has been assessed by an independent certification board against defined international standards — not just completed a training course.

Board Certified = Independently Verified Competence

Board Certification means the examiner was evaluated by an independent credentialing board — not the school that trained them. The board verifies that the candidate meets published competency standards through a standardized, unbiased assessment process.

ACBPE-affiliated examiners who hold the PPE® credential are Board Certified under ISO/IEC 17024 through ISCB, with independent oversight by ANAB.

Training vs. Board Certification

Training

  • Awarded by the school that trained you
  • Measures hours attended, not competence demonstrated
  • No independent verification
  • Standards vary widely by institution
  • May not require ongoing renewal

Board Certification (PPE®)

  • Awarded by an independent certification board (ISCB)
  • Measures knowledge, skills and professional competencies
  • Independently verified by ANAB under ISO/IEC 17024
  • Uniform international standard — consistent worldwide
  • Renewal required with ongoing professional development
